A special evening with Ken Forrester & Billecart-Salmon
It is not every day that one gets to enjoy top class French Champagne at one's doorstep. We were invited to join Ken Forrester, importer of Billecart-Salmon - one of the top Family-owned French Champagne houses, and Paul-Edouard Bertin( family member) to enjoy some of their magnificent tiny bubbles which were paired with a delicious dinner at 96 Winery Road. We were also treated to their 1999, which Paul gently decanted for us. Wow... very special! Just after the 2nd World War there were only 12 000 bottles left of their champagne, but according to Paul, even the Germans helped to ensure that their bottles were protected by building false walls in their 'Cave'. I am ever so grateful to them! Not only was the champagne fabulous, but Ken also offered us some of his brand new Dirty Little Secret, one of the most expensive white wines now in South Africa. And with his Chenins reaching R1000 a bottle at the recent Nederburg Auction, I am sure that if you keep a few bottles of this rich DLS, it will be a great investment.
