We celebrate International Grenache Day today and wanted to share some interesting facts about this versatile grape.
Grenache is a flexible grape variety found in some of the most delicious and luxurious wines around the world! From California, South Africa, France, the USA to Sardinia and Aragon in Spain, this is fast becoming the most important wine in the world after Cabernet Sauvignon. Garnacha or Grenache originated in Eastern Spain although some believe the Aragonese transported if from Sardinia in the 14th Century.
Grenache is a late-ripening variety and unblended it creates some interesting light-coloured wines that are soft in tannins.
There are unmistakable strawberry and raspberry fruit flavours with crisp acidity. In warmer growing regions it also contains spicy hints like Anise, Tobacco and Cinnamon. It makes the perfect Rhône style blend and the spice in Grenache matches well with spicy foods.
